Jeypore August 12: Varalakshmi Pooja or Varalakshmi Vratam is an auspicious puja dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi. It is observed on second Friday of Shravana Masam in South Indian states. Mainly the women folk of these states celebrate this festival with great enthusiasm. On this particular day women wake up early finish their bath (Mangalasnanam), wear new cloths and decorate their houses with "Toranams"(Flowers and mango leaves garlands). Many women observe fast on this day. They prepare various dishes like Pulihora, Paravannam, Boorelu, and Pongadalu to offer as sacred food (Prasadam) to Goddess Laxmi.  Later they worship Goddess Varalakshmi and offer prasadam (sacred food) and fruits to at least five women. Many people purchase gold on this auspicious day and offer to Goddess Laxmi. They believe this will bring good luck to their homes and Goddess Lakshmi will bless them with boons. Like every year the Varalakshmi Vratam was celebrated with great spirit by Jeypore people. Temples in the town were packed with worshipers. A large number of women devotees performed Puja at Sri  Kanyaka Parameswari temple in Maharani Peta.  As gold prices touching around 27000 per 10 gm many people couldn't purchase gold this year. Women devotees said that even the prices of fruits and flowers are too high this time.
