Hunger-free Koraput district by 2015 - Prof. M.S.Swaminathan

Jeypore.October 29. Koraput district will be free from hunger by 2015 said Professor M.S.Swaminathan, the founder of M.S.Swaminathan Research Foundation(MSSRF) and Rajya Sabha member.
Inaugurating a training program for the "Community Hunger Fighters" at Biju Patnaik Medicinal Plants Garden & Research Center, Pulbeda near Jeypore on Friday,  Prof. Swaminathan said that the MSSRF is launching an integrated community centred approch to address hunger and malnutrition related issues through volunteers from the village community called as "Community Hunger Fighters" in Koraput district.
Releasing the brochure on training 
Koraput district is a part of KBK (Koraput,Balangir and Kalahandi) districts,  which are recognized as most backward and hunger districts in the country. This district has been chosen to start this initiative because of the widespread prevalence of endemic and hidden hunger in the region. Community hunger fighters cadre of grassroots level community volunteers, who will be trained to assess the major causes of malnutrition in the community. The community hunger fighters will work closely with relevant government staff to ensure that the food and nutrition entitlements reach the unreachable. The system of delivery of nutrition support schemes like Integrated Child Development Scheme(ICDS), Midday meal program etc.

The Hunger fighters will be trained to address issues of balanced nutrition for pregnant mothers, in order to ensure that the new born child has a minimum birth weight of 2.5 kg he said. Further he stated that the National Food Security Act is going to be implemented in the next parliament session. The community hunger Fighters will be chosen by the Gram Sabha of the Village council. Till now 25 members were selected from five  villages under Bonoguda GP. Speaking on the occasion the District Collector of Koraput, Mr.Sachin Ram Chandra Yadav said that the district need communication facilities, best leadership and awareness to eradicate the hunger, backwardness in the district.

Explaining about the project, The Program Executive of "Community Hunger Fighters", Dr.Rama Narayanan said that the hunger fighters will work to increase the level of awareness on nutrition and health related issues among the people. The program will be linked with appropriate government and civil society agencies programs, and in particular with the National Horticulture and food security missions, Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana, Rajeev Gandhi Drinking Water mission,Total Sanitation Program and appropriated tribal development programs.

On this occasion the District Collector released a brochure on training of a cadre of Community Hunger Fighters. Dr.K.U.k.Nampoodry presided the function. Earlier the "Father of green revolution in India" Professor Swaminathan inaugurated the MSSRF and IGNO Community College building in the premises of the Research Campus.
