Farmers felicitated on recognition of Koraput as GIAHS

Jeypore.February.6: Several farmers from Koraput district were felicitated for their achievement and good result in farming system and genetic diversity of cultivated rice and growing traditional cultivation varieties here on Monday.
The farmers who also the winners of national and international awards for their achievements in traditional farming system, were honored by the District Collector Mr.Sachin Rama Chandhra Yadav in function held at M.S Swaminathan Research Foundation center, Jeypore.

On this occasion national award winner scientist Mr.Saujanendra Swain said that the awards were presented to the farmers on recognition of Koraput as a globally important agriculture heritage system(GIAHS). He said that the Jeypore tract of Odisha is famous for the genetic diversity of Asian cultivated rice and has been considered as center of origin of aus ecotype of rice.
The tribal farmers families inhabited here responsible for the demystification and conservation of rice genetic resources for several generations. Traditional cultivation practices suitable for diverse agro-ecological zones are still carried out by the tribal communities providing their indigenous technical  knowledge in rice farming in the region he added.
The farmer's representatives addressed on their efforts and contribution to the traditional agriculture in Koraput region. Dr.Nampoothiri, Director of MSSRF, Jeypore presided the function  and Mr. Sushsant Shekar Chowdhury presented vote of thanks.
