M.S.Swaminathan Research Foundation, Jeypore got National Water Award-2010.

Jeypore Times : M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, Jeypore has been declared as winner of the “National Water Award for 2010” by the Ministry of Water Resources, Govt. of India under the NGO category.

Irrigation project
This organization is one among the two awardees in the state of Odisha. The organization receives the award for its innovative and exemplary implementation of Bio-Industrial Watershed Program in Tolla Watershed Area in Boipariguda block of Koraput district. The project, presently in its fifth year, aims at evolving enhanced livelihoods in rain-fed systems through sustainable natural resources management especially, land and water, adopting a decentralized community-managed approach.
Water resources
It was successfully able to create new water resources/ bodies to a tune of 9988.5cu.mts. in its six operational villages facilitating successful cultivation of different crops during kharif and rabi and during off-seasons providing enhanced monetary returns to 272 households. The water sources created not only helped in enhanced crop production but also helped in domestic and cattle uses besides helping in augmenting the ground water table and micro climate of the area. The project was able to bring 278.5 acres fallow lands under cultivation through various soil and water conservation measures.
Irrigation methods
The award assumes utmost significance to the organization and tribal and poor communities of Koraput with recent recognition of Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Site coming to Koraput from FAO. The prize will be awarded during the Fourth National Ground Water Congress on 22nd March at New Delhi. This could be achieved due to the sincere and hard work of the Bio-industrial staff of the Foundation.
